Philosophy and Curriculum
At Heights Cooperative Preschool, our philosophy is that children are naturally strong, capable learners worthy of our trust and support. We work together with students to co-create a rich learning environment, building upon each child’s interests and passions.
We believe that playing is learning! Our teachers follow the Emergent Curriculum approach, as this approach is most consistent with our understanding of how children learn and is the most developmentally appropriate for our students. |
Research supports play-based learningThe early years of life are the time when children are developing self-esteem, a sense of belonging, and the confidence and security that build a solid foundation for learning. Emergent Curriculum builds upon the interests of the children and weaves learning through play.
We don’t separate learning into discrete blocks of time for math, language, and other broad categories. Rather, our students learn about themselves and the world around them through investigation and discovery, art, dramatic play, and social interaction. Literacy and numbers are woven through all activities, taking place in each of our early learning activity centers and play spaces. Families can continue this philosophy beyond the classroom and implement play-based learning, dramatic play, and other supportive methods at home. Visit our resource page to learn more! |
