Philosophy and Curriculum

Picture
At Heights Cooperative Preschool, our philosophy is that children are naturally strong, capable learners worthy of our trust and support. We work together with students to co-create a rich learning environment, building upon each child’s interests and passions.

We believe that playing is learning! Our teachers follow the Emergent Curriculum approach, as this approach is most consistent with our understanding of how children learn and is the most developmentally appropriate for our students.

Research supports play-based learning

The early years of life are the time when children are developing self-esteem, a sense of belonging, and the confidence and security that build a solid foundation for learning. Emergent Curriculum builds upon the interests of the children and weaves learning through play.

We don’t separate learning into discrete blocks of time for math, language, and other broad categories. Rather, our students learn about themselves and the world around them through investigation and discovery, art, dramatic play, and social interaction. Literacy and numbers are woven through all activities, taking place in each of our early learning activity centers and play spaces.

Families can continue this philosophy beyond the classroom and implement play-based learning, dramatic play, and other supportive methods at home. Visit our resource page to learn more!

A Typical Day at Heights

Classroom activities in our school change every day, because the children guide their own learning process.

However, some things are consistent! Here are the components of an average day at our school.

Learning Spaces

Each classroom has age-appropriate spaces designed to engage students in play-based learning. These spaces include dramatic play, blocks, loose parts, early literature, sensory play, art, reading, and more. See a visual tour of a classroom here!

Snack Time

Each day, our students enjoy a healthy snack sent from home!

Circle Time

Teacher-directed time for the full class to sit together for a story, music, sharing, group discussion, or other whole group learning activities.

Outside Play

We go outside as much as possible, weather permitting! In our outdoor play space, there is a playhouse for dramatic play, a jungle gym, tricycles, a sand table, and many other outdoor activities. When we aren’t able to make it outside, the children enjoy our indoor gym where they can make big movements and sounds.

Extended Day

Most of our classes have an extended day option, which continues the students’ school day until 1:00pm after a packed lunch from home!

Enrichment

We also offer weekly yoga classes for all students in classes that meet 3+ times per week, as well as a library for students to check out books, and other extra activities offered seasonally during school hours, extended days, or family events! Learn more about our enrichment activities here.
